Its purpose is to increase awareness for parents and their children related to family unity and personal communication patterns. Many of todays parents grew up in homes in which yelling, cursing, hitting, and belittling were common forms of parenting. They not only adopted their parents methods, but have added calling the local authorities, having school hearings, and juvenile probation to what will be part of their childrens memories of growing up. In the following pages we will discuss these maladaptive reaction patterns and provide tools to decrease the generational disconnection they cause, and teach parents to create an environment of family unity. Though the word parent is used throughout the book, these tools are applicable for anyone who is the primary caregiver and support of a child from the millennial generation (anyone born in 1990 or later). I wrote this book out of my concern for parents and their children. In my practice, I counsel families on a regular basis. Many of these parents come to me with children who have been labeled bad, disruptive, or ADHD. There are many medical and biological reasons children may have adjustment problems or have trouble sitting still in school. However, many of the problems that make children act out and seem undisciplined can be improved with the communication and family structure guidelines that I have developed after nearly a decade of counseling parents and families. Read through the book and do the thinking exercises that will help you reflect on your own parenting style and the influence your parents child rearing methods have on your own methods. More importantly, consider whether your parents methods were effective. Did they bring you closer to them, or push you away Did you grow up angry and bitter towards your parents, or do you still love them and seek to truly honor them Knowing the answers to these questions will help you understand why your child rearing methods may or may not be effective with your own children. For your convenience I have included a Family Meeting Guide at the back of the book. Use this information to have more productive family discussions. By including your children in the discussion, and not just talking at or to them, you will give your family a mentally healthier environment and make the entire home seem less stressful.
